Truss Machine

The automated system responsible for creating the trusses of the Richmond Olympic speed skating oval.

The design of the roof called for trusses made up of a triple chevron pattern in varying lengths. When the construction contractor realized how complicated the roof structure would be to assemble, they chose to hire us to design and build an automatic truss machine for guaranteed consistency.

The strand machine was commissioned, designed, and built within 10 months. After commissioning it completed the task of creating 1500 trusses, assembling over 100,000 parts and inserting close to 1 million nails.

This allowed our customer to complete the Olympic roof project on time, and under budget.

Based on the input given through a CAD file this system automatically assembled and bent trusses of varying length for the entirety of the speed skating oval roof.
