Stud Welder

A small single operator unit designed to weld steel studs in the construction of permanent concrete forms that vastly increase the earthquake resistance of the center shear wall core. It is placed on the steel sheet and moved to weld the form sheet to the 1" steel studs on 12" centers, the operator then wheels the assembly into position for the next stud stud. Electromagnets lock the unit in place, after which the locator assembly withdraws leaving the stud centered in the unit. The machine then applies a consistent, repeatable weld in 11 seconds, and the operator moves to the next stud.

This project was undertaken on a time and materials contract and required a total of 40 days from concept to physical prototype.

Eight of these devices were used by Supreme Steel in the construction of the Ranier Square Tower in Seattle. In total they carried out roughly 900,000 welds and allowed the construction of the "Shear Wall Core" to finish 6 months ahead of schedule.
